Description

sntfy is a limited version of a notification service called ntfy, made for Sandstorm. With sntfy, you can get push notifications for many open source Android applications and other services without needing Google services. iOS support is limited.

Traditionally, push notifications for your Android apps are routed through Google services to save on bandwidth. ntfy replaces Google with something called UnifiedPush. Setup on your phone is done with the ntfy Android companion app, and is surprisingly simple!

ntfy supports many Android apps, like Tusky for Mastodon and Element for Matrix. Apart from Android apps, there are a number of other integrations that can send you notifications with ntfy. You can easily send notifications from your own custom scripts and applications too!

Just install and follow the in-app instructions.

Though sntfy works pretty reliably, it has occasional hiccups. It is not recommended for anything that is "mission critical"

Sandstorm-specific Differences

sntfy has some benefits and some drawbacks compared to standard ntfy. For instance, standard ntfy is built as a public server, whereas sntfy is built for a single user. This will give you more control over who is using your grain to relay notifications (hopefully only to you!). On the other hand, because of technical hurdles related to Sandstorm's strict security approach, ntfy's protected topics are not possible at this time.

There are a handful of other features, and possibly some integrations, that will not work quite the same here as in the standard version of ntfy. You can read more about it here.

Help out

Any feedback would be great! In particular, if you'd like to report which apps or integrations work or don't work, that would be great.

Also, if you're interested in helping to translate the Sandstorm-specific text that has been added, please reach out!

v2.28.0-sandstorm-18

Upgrade to ntfy v2.28.0 (with Sandstorm changes on top). See link for upstream fixes. This is described as a "hardening" release.

v2.27.0-sandstorm-17

Upgrade to ntfy v2.27.0 (with Sandstorm changes on top). See link for upstream fixes, including a couple security fixes.

v2.26.0-sandstorm-16

Upgrade to ntfy v2.26.0 (with Sandstorm changes on top). Most importantly it fixes a DOS attack for templates. (Though this is largeyly mitigated on Sandstorm, since your server is only accessible to servers you shared it with).

v2.25.0-sandstorm-15

Rebrand to "sntfy" to avoid expectations that this is actually "ntfy". Change SLA to no longer track non-working features or check them very carefully. It's too difficult to keep up with ntfy and account for Sandstorm's framework.

Upgrade to ntfy v2.25.0 (with Sandstorm changes on top). See other releases in between v2.15.0 and v2.25.0 for details, though a lot of it will not apply to sntfy.

v2.15.0-sandstorm-14

Upgrade to ntfy v2.15.0 (with Sandstorm changes on top). For ntfy-Sandstorm, this adds:

  • Mitigation around "database locked" errors (probably not an issue for Sandstorm because it's low traffic anyway)
  • Build with nopayments, nofirebase, and nowebpush in hopes of making a slightly smaller download (and hypothetically smaller attack surface)

v2.14.0-sandstorm-12

Upgrade to ntfy v2.14.0 (with Sandstorm changes on top). For ntfy-Sandstorm, this adds:

  • pre-defined templates (github, grafana, etc)
  • sprig template functions

v2.13.0-sandstorm-11

Initial release of the Sandstorm fork.

  • Adds onboarding
  • Adds a whole bunch of caveats and warnings about the limitations of the Sandstorm fork
  • Removes a handful of features from the UI that won't work well with the Sandstorm fork
  • Adds "admin" permission for grain UI and "fullapi" permission for ntfy topic communication.

For now the permissions only show an error screen if you try to share the grain with an anon user. In the future it'll be used to guard admin features in the UI. I may also add read-only API URLs but that will require new permissions.
